Overview

 

ABMARC's Real World Economy & Emissions (RWE) service provides evidence-based solutions for fuel, engine, vehicle, emissions and performance projects.

 

RWE is for anything with an engine that’s stationary or moves!

 

We precisely measure the emissions (gaseous and particulates) and fuel consumption to global regulatory standards across a wide range of fuels and technologies on applications from light to heavy commercial vehicles, as well as the largest mining equipment, locomotives and marine vessels.

 

ABMARC has Australia's only Portable Emissions Measurement System, or PEMS, which complies with US EPA (EPA 1065 2007) and European Commission (EC 595 2009 and Regulation 49) standards.

 

PEMS testing is used to provide highly accurate information for OH&S requirements, environment, air quality, certification, regulation, product development and marketing purposes.

Portable Emissions Measurement system

ABMARC has Australia’s only portable emissions measurement system (PEMS), which complies with US EPA and European Commission standards.

 

PEMS achieves laboratory quality data, accuracy and repeatability from 0.5% on-site and in the field.

 

PEMS measures gaseous emissions, particulates, fuel consumption and power on vehicles and engines in mobile or stationary configurations.

Performance measurement

We are able to measure mechanical or electrical power and fuel consumption on any engine or vehicle, anywhere in Australia. Measurements can occur on site or be remotely logged. We can measure data from the vehicle or engine's communication network or install measurement equipment for high accuracy and repeatability. We can combine this information with PEMS data for purposes such as air quality modelling or analysis of fleet emissions on mine sites.

    Utilising vehicle CAN or fuel meters and power measurement devices, we measure the real world fuel economy of vehicles and engines.
  • Engine Power
    ABMARC can measure engine power from stationary or mobile engines, including power generators and locomotives. We employ a range of tools including strain gauges for torque measurement and laboratory grade power analysers. With a range of high accuracy current and voltage transducers for both AC and DC motors/generators, ABMARC is able to measure the electrical power from any size generator or diesel electric engine.

01 Case Studies

Quantifying Operating Cost Reductions

 

ABMARC was engaged to conduct a trial on two heavy commercial vehicles operating on a gaseous alternative fuel system. The objective of the trial was to quantify the benefits achieved across both operating costs and emissions under real world conditions.

 

The trial involved installing high accuracy fuel flow meters, including a Coriolis flow meter for gas measurement, strain gauges on the driveshaft for power calculation from torque and RPM, and operating the trucks over a number of weeks in both diesel only and diesel/gas modes. This was complemented by a comprehensive emissions analysis to ECE and US EPA test methodologies, measuring CO, NO, NO2, CO2, THC and particulates on a second by second basis over a test route comprising, urban, rural and highway driving.

 

 

  Aftermarket Fuel System

Real World Fuel Economy

 

Two vehicles, a 2013 Ford Falcon XR6 and a 2013 Holden Cruze 1.8L, were evaluated for fuel consumption on a simulated New European Drive Cycle (NEDC) on a flat, closed road, and then tested in the real world through Brisbane's streets.

 

The NEDC is the official drive cycle that manufacturers test new vehicles to. The fuel consumption results from the NEDC test form the basis of information provided to consumers to inform their vehicle purchase decisions. In our testing, we compared the official figures to real world information. It is common knowledge that fuel consumption achieved on the official drive cycle does not reflect the real world driving conditions due to the large variation in driving styles.

 

The increase in annual fuel costs of the real world driving compared to the official figures was calculated to be 19.7% higher for the Holden Cruze and 9.1% higher for the Ford Falcon over our comparative test cycles.
